Every third Monday in January (this year 20 January) is known in the media as "the most depressing day of the year". But why? You can read about its accompanying factors and how we at Boutique Hotel Zlatý Klucik have tried to make it more pleasant for you in this article.
How did Blue Monday come about?
We all know that Mondays can be unpleasant. Add to that January's (classically depressing) weather, failed New Year's resolutions, or constant incoming bills and bills, and you have a formula for depression. And literally! A psychologist and a native of Wales, Dr. Cliff Arnall discovered in 2014 that a combination of certain external and internal factors make people unhappy. According to him, the following seven factors, which he inserted into the formula, cause people to be the least happy on the third Monday of January:
This equation implies that W means (bad) weather, D are accumulated debts, small d represents the monthly salary, T is the time that has passed since a beautiful and merry Christmas, but a Q again, the time during which we failed in our New Year's resolutions. In the denominator of the equation we have M, showing low levels of motivation, and Na expressing our need to step in and remedy this situation.
Despite his efforts, Dr. Arnall later admitted that this miracle formula in no way contributes to individual feelings, and that psychological problems such as depression cannot (of course) be counted.
Blue Monday today
Although not confirmed by the equation, Blue Monday continues to be internationally known and "celebrated" as the most depressing day of the year. Although it is not an official holiday, everyone took this day in their own way - while some boycott it and fight against the bad mood with blue drinks, food, or watching comedies, others refuse to get out of bed or leave the house, which they supplement by listening to sad music.
